Next Salem History Society Meeting--Summer Outing, September Meeting
Happy summer to all!
We'd like to share news of a student who wishes to interview Salem residents for dissertation topic: "Changing Perceptions of Our History."
Here is an invitation from Lizzie Richardson, Cambridge University, UK, to all residents of Salem:
"Dear all,
My research in Salem is focused on the perceptions of and potential conflicts in the use and portrayal of the cityıs history.
As such, it would be great to talk to anyone with a general or detailed interest in Salemıs history and its current presentation and understanding by both residents and tourists.
...I am available most of the time and can go to most places in downtown Salem.
I will only take up 15-20 minutes of your time I promise!
The perceptions and opinions of local residents and community figures is fundamental to my research so I would be very grateful if any of you would agree to talk to me.
Thanks very much and I look forward to hearing from you..."
Lizzie Richardson is a second year undergraduate geography student at Cambridge University (England).
She is staying in Salem for about three weeks (until July 27) to carry out research for her dissertation.
Her research is focused on perceptions of history in Salem (held by both residents and locals), rather than research into the historical detail per se.
She is primarily looking to interview residents, and also is interested in observing tourists.
She is also interested in any literature that exists on Salem as a heritage site.
Please contact us at the Salem History Society if you wish to be interviewed by Ms. Richardson. E-mail us at salemhistory@salemhistorysociety.org.
We wonıt be meeting as a society until September, but we probably will organize a membership sail on the Schooner Fame, just as we took last year.
Look for announcements in the Gazette column, on the Salem History Common, and on the web site.
Our schedule of meetings will be changing for the fall; we will be having meetings four times during the school year, with our first meeting in September.
Also, our format will be changing.
Each meeting will centered around a theme or subject and will have more variety in presentation, with an emphasis on membership participation, membership planning, and conversational tone.
This is your society and please feel welcome to use the Common, the web site and the meetings as a way to facilitate your activities and to enjoy your interests!
That is a large part of what the SHS was founded to encourage.
Looking forward to a great second year in beautiful Historic Salem and Essex County!
As we go into our second year of the SHS, membership is enthusiastically invited to step forward and be heard! Do you have stories to tell about historic events -- big, small or in-between -- which took place in Salem or Essex County?
What was your neighborhood like when you grew up here? When you moved here?
Did you visit Salem or Essex County 30, 40, 50 years ago? What were your memories of the town then?
How did you learn about Salem in the first place? In school? Family visit? How did Salem impress you as a child? What about famous people from here, how did you hear about them? Who were they?
If you lived here, were you involved in politics, cultural events, in community activities, church communities, or school ³stuff²? Describe them.
Have you got a cool story about people weıve forgotten or should remember better or differently? What about buildings and businesses that used to be here?
Who always gets ³left out²? Who makes you scream ³enough already!²?
You are invited to tell those stories on the Salem History Common!
