Hoping these last weeks of summer are going well for all!

Our annual summer membership outing will be an evening sail on the Schooner Fame, set for 6 p.m. on Aug. 20, 2008.
Capt. Michael Rutstein has again graciously extended the offer of a discounted fare for all members of the SHS. Please buy your tickets independently for Aug. 20, 6 p.m., and identify yourself as a member of SHS at time of purchase.

Wešll all gather at dockside the evening of the sail; best to plan to get there a bit early. This is an enjoyable event which will probably become a cherished tradition for the Society.

Our first Salem History Society program and meeting will be held at Cornerstone Books on Sept. 9, 2008, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Our guests that evening will be the chair of the Salem Historical Commission and the president of Historic Salem, Inc..

They will be leading a conversation about the service their respective organizations provide
to further the appreciation of Salem's history, and, overall, to the residents of Salem.
More information will be provided in the next SHS News and Events column, on our website, and on the Salem History Common.

All are welcome to attend, both current and potential members of SHS alike.

MEMBERSHIP MEMORIES AND STORIES SOUGHT

Do you have stories to tell about historic events--big, small, or in-between? which took place in Salem or Essex County?

What was your neighborhood like when you grew up here? When you moved here?

Did you visit Salem or Essex County 30, 40, 50 years ago? What were your memories of the town then?

How did you learn about Salem in the first place? In school? Family visit? How did Salem impress you as a child? What about famous people from here, how did you hear about them? Who were they?

If you lived here, were you involved in politics, cultural events, in community activities, church communities, or school "stuff"? Describe them.

Have you got a cool story about people we've forgotten or should remember better or differently? What about buildings and businesses that used to be here?

Who always gets "left out"? Who are you tired of hearing about?

The Salem History Society will provide a gathering place for your stories and remembrances and we'll keep it open to discussion on the Common.
We can share some of these stories in future programs and in a special project which is being discussed for the SHS -- especially if we get enough variety.
We'll keep this thread going on an open-ended basis. Wešll discuss some ideas at the September meeting.
